Laser Hair Removal: The Complete Guide
How laser hair removal works, who it suits, how much it hurts, how many sessions you need and what results to expect — a calm, honest guide from the specialists at Skin Care by Ana in Tallinn.

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular skin treatments — and also one that raises the most questions. In this comprehensive guide we explain, calmly and honestly, how the method actually works, who it suits, what to expect during each session and what results are realistic to hope for. We do not make miracle promises — we share what the science, and our daily work in our Tallinn clinic, have shown. If a specific question comes up as you read, you will find quick answers in our laser hair removal FAQ.
How laser hair removal works
The principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis — a complicated term for a simple idea. The laser emits pulses of light at a precise wavelength that the pigment (melanin) in the hair absorbs. That absorbed light turns into heat, which warms the follicle and damages the structure that grows the hair — without significantly affecting the surrounding skin.
This is exactly why the laser works best when there is good contrast between hair and skin: dark hair on lighter skin. Modern devices, such as longer-wavelength Nd:YAG lasers, can also treat darker skin tones safely, but blonde, grey and red hairs remain difficult because they lack the pigment the laser targets. If you are weighing laser against IPL, we explain the differences in full in laser hair removal vs IPL.
Why you need several sessions
One of the most common misunderstandings is the hope that a single session will solve everything. In reality, hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects hairs that are currently in their active growth phase (anagen). At any given moment only a portion of your hairs are in that phase — which is why repeated sessions are needed to catch as many follicles as possible while they are active.
Most clients need 6 to 10 sessions for a visible, lasting result, typically spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the body area. Facial and bikini hair grows faster and needs a tighter schedule than legs or back. After the core course, some clients choose a maintenance session once a year.
- Face and upper lip: fast growth, sessions often every 4–6 weeks
- Underarms and bikini: medium growth, responds well
- Legs, arms and back: larger areas, sessions every 6–8 weeks
How much it hurts
The honest answer: laser hair removal is not completely painless, but most clients describe it as a mild heat sensation or the snap of a rubber band against the skin. How it feels depends on the area — more delicate skin, such as the upper lip or bikini line, is more sensitive than the legs.
Modern devices have integrated cooling that protects the skin and makes the procedure considerably more comfortable. Most people get used to the sensation within the very first session. A single session lasts anywhere from a few minutes to about an hour depending on the area, and many clients fit it into a lunch break.
Results and permanence
Let us be honest about the terminology. The correct medical term is permanent hair reduction, not "permanent removal". This means that after a complete course the amount of hair decreases significantly and lastingly — often by 80–90% — and any remaining hair is typically lighter and finer. No honest clinic can promise that every single hair will disappear forever.
Results are influenced by hormones, genetics and age. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or hormonal changes, can stimulate new hair growth, which is why some clients need an occasional maintenance session. That does not mean the treatment failed — it is simply the body's biology.
Safety and contraindications
Performed correctly, laser hair removal is a very safe procedure. The most common temporary reactions are mild redness and warmth, which usually settle within a few hours. More serious reactions are rare and almost always occur when the skin type or settings have not been assessed properly — which is exactly why a consultation and patch test is a mandatory first step in our practice.
Some situations call for caution or postponement. Please be sure to tell us if any of the following apply to you:
- Pregnancy (we generally recommend postponing treatment)
- Medications that increase light sensitivity (e.g. some antibiotics, isotretinoin)
- Recent tanning or significantly sunburned skin
- Active skin infections, herpes or inflammation in the treatment area
- Tattoos and moles in the treatment area (these are covered or avoided)
The sun deserves special attention. Because a fresh tan increases the risk of side effects, summer treatment is entirely possible but requires a careful plan — which we have summarised in laser hair removal in summer.
How to prepare and care for your skin afterwards
Good preparation improves results and reduces risk. About 24 hours before your session, shave the treatment area clean — the laser targets the follicle beneath the skin, not the hair on the surface. Avoid plucking, waxing and epilating for at least four weeks before treatment, as these remove the root the laser needs.
After a session the skin is briefly more sensitive. Keep the area cool, avoid hot saunas, swimming pools and intense exercise on the first day, and use sun protection every day. We have written out the entire aftercare routine — from moisturising to sun protection — in detail in laser hair removal aftercare.
How much it costs
The price depends on the size of the area, the number of sessions needed and whether you buy a single session or a package. Smaller areas such as the upper lip are more affordable; larger areas such as the legs cost more, but the price per session is usually lower in a package. Over the long run, laser often turns out cheaper than years of waxing or shaving.
