Laser hair removal: does it hurt, how many sessions, is it permanent?

The honest answers to the questions we hear most about laser hair removal — pain, number of sessions, results and how to prepare — from our studio in central Tallinn.

A laser hair-removal treatment — the handpiece on warm-lit skin

Laser hair removal is one of the most-requested treatments at our Tallinn studio — and also the one people have the most questions about. Here are honest answers to what clients ask most, so you know exactly what to expect before you book.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people describe it as a warm snap, like a light elastic band against the skin. Modern diode lasers cool the skin as they work, which makes it very tolerable — usually far more comfortable than waxing. Sensitive areas like the upper lip or bikini feel a little more, but each pulse lasts only a fraction of a second.

How many sessions will I need?

Most areas need 6–8 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects hairs in their active growth phase — so several sessions are needed to catch every follicle. You will usually see noticeable thinning after the first two or three.

Is it permanent?

Laser gives permanent hair reduction — treated follicles stop producing hair for good. A small number can reactivate over the years (often due to hormonal changes), so an occasional maintenance session keeps results smooth. No method is "100% forever", and anyone promising that is not being honest with you.

How should I prepare?

  • Shave the area 12–24 hours before — do not wax or pluck for 4 weeks, as the root must be intact.
  • Avoid sun and self-tan for about 2 weeks before; laser and tanned skin do not mix.
  • Skip perfumed lotions or deodorant on the area on the day of treatment.

What about aftercare?

Expect mild redness for a few hours, like light sunburn. Avoid hot saunas, the gym and sun for 24–48 hours, apply SPF to exposed areas, and do not scrub. We go through full aftercare with you at your appointment.

Who is it not for?

Laser works best on dark hair; very light, grey or red hair responds poorly. It is not done during pregnancy, on certain medications, or over a fresh tan. We always check that it is suitable for you at a consultation first.
