Can you do laser hair removal in summer?

Summer is when people ask about laser most — and the season with the most myths. Here is how to do it safely when the sun is out in Tallinn.

A warm, calm treatment room with natural light

Every June we get the same question: can I have laser hair removal in summer? The short answer is yes — but with a few sensible precautions, because laser and UV exposure do not mix well.

Why the sun matters for laser

Laser targets the pigment (melanin) in your hair. A suntan adds melanin to your skin, which means the laser cannot tell hair from skin as easily — and that raises the risk of irritation or pigment changes. That is why tanned or sunburnt skin is a no.

How to do laser safely in summer

  • Avoid direct sun and sunbeds for about 2 weeks before each session.
  • No self-tan for 2 weeks before — it reads like a real tan to the laser.
  • Apply SPF 50 daily to treated areas, especially if they are exposed.
  • Plan sessions around your beach days, not right after them.

Is winter actually better?

Autumn and winter are the easiest time to run a full course, simply because your skin is at its natural, untanned tone and stays covered. But there is no need to wait — if you protect your skin, summer works perfectly, and starting now means smoother results by next summer.

Planning around a beach holiday

The most common summer clash looks like this: a session booked for mid-July and a week in the sun at the end of the month. The order matters. Have the session before the trip, give the skin a few quiet days, then enjoy the beach with SPF on the treated areas. The other way round — arriving straight off the plane with a fresh tan — means we will honestly ask you to wait until the colour fades, because a tan is exactly the risk we are trying not to treat over.

The good news: sessions sit 4–6 weeks apart anyway, so one holiday rarely derails a course. Mention your travel dates at the free consultation and we will place the sessions around them — often shifting a single appointment by a week is all it takes.

Which areas are easy in summer — and which need planning

Underarms and the bikini line barely see daylight even in July, which makes them the simplest summer areas — underarm laser is a classic low-risk start. Legs, arms and face need more thought: they are exposed all season, so the two-week no-sun rule before each session and daily SPF afterwards genuinely matter for them. If you are weighing when to begin a full course, we compared the seasons in the best time to start laser.

One more heat-specific note: the first 24–48 hours after a session are for keeping the area calm — no sauna, no hard training, a fragrance-free moisturiser instead of active skincare. In a heatwave that simply means booking on a day when you can take the evening slowly.

The bottom line

You do not have to put treatment on hold for the Estonian summer. With sun avoidance before and after, and daily SPF, laser is safe and effective year-round.
