Underarm Laser Hair Removal: The Easiest Way to Start
Underarm laser hair removal is quick, well tolerated and gives one of the clearest results. We explain how a session goes, what to do about deodorant and how many visits it takes.

If you are considering laser hair removal but do not know where to start, the underarms are almost always the best first choice. The area is small, the session is quick, and the result is one of the clearest laser can offer. Here is why that is, and what to keep in mind specifically for underarms.
Why are underarms the best place to start?
- Underarm hair is usually dark and coarse — exactly what the laser targets best.
- The area is small: the active part of a session often takes only 10–15 minutes.
- The difference shows quickly — many people notice thinning after just a couple of sessions.
- The everyday win is real: no razor, no ingrown hairs, no irritation under deodorant.
This is exactly why we often recommend underarms to those who simply want to try how laser feels before committing to larger areas.
What does an underarm session look like?
You arrive with your underarms shaved beforehand (12–24 hours earlier). We apply a gel, set the laser to your skin and hair type, and work through the area pulse by pulse. The sensation is a warm snap that the cooling immediately softens — underarms are surprisingly easy to tolerate. Including preparation and a calming finish, you are in the studio for about half an hour.
Preparation: three simple rules
Underarm preparation is the easiest on the whole body — but three things are still worth remembering:
- Shave your underarms 12–24 hours before the session — any razor irritation has time to settle, while the hair root stays in place.
- Do not wax or use an epilator for 4 weeks before, as these remove the root the laser needs.
- If you use active products on the underarms, such as acid-based exfoliants, set those aside for a couple of days before the session too.
That is all it takes. The charm of underarms is that preparation takes less time than your morning coffee — and unlike waxing, you do not have to "grow out" the hair before a session. Quite the opposite: you arrive freshly shaved, and the session fits into a lunch break without anyone at work noticing a thing.
Deodorant and underarm aftercare
The special thing about underarms is deodorant — and the rules here are simple:
- Come without deodorant on the day of your session — its residue can interfere with the light energy and irritate the skin.
- After the session, wait 24–48 hours before using deodorant again, until the skin has calmed; then choose a gentle, alcohol-free product.
- For the first two days avoid the sauna, hot showers and intense workouts — sweat irritates freshly treated skin.
- Mild redness or small bumps around the follicles are normal and settle within a couple of days.
How many sessions do underarms need?
A typical course is 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart — the same logic as elsewhere on the body, because the laser only catches hairs in their active growth phase. We wrote about why that is in more detail here. Thanks to the small area, underarms are among the most affordable zones, and you get an exact quote at the consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Does laser help with sweating too?
The honest answer: no. The laser targets hair follicles, not sweat glands, so it does not reduce sweating. That said, many clients find the underarm stays fresher without hair and deodorant applies more evenly.
Can I work out on the day of my session?
Before the session yes, after it no — sweat and friction irritate the treated skin. Plan your workout for before your appointment, or skip it for 48 hours.
What about ingrown hairs in the underarms?
Laser is one of the most effective solutions for ingrown hairs there is: when a follicle no longer produces hair, there is nothing left to grow in. Existing irritation usually calms down noticeably over the course.
Is a darker skin tone an obstacle?
Usually not — a modern laser can be adjusted for different skin tones. We review your skin at the consultation and choose settings that are safe specifically for you.
