Does Microneedling Actually Work? What Science and Practice Show

Microneedling is one of the few treatments with solid science behind it. The honest answer to "does it work": yes — under certain conditions, for certain concerns, on a certain timeline.

"Does it actually work?" is the most honest question you can ask about any treatment — and with microneedling we’re glad to answer it, because the answer doesn’t depend on marketing. Microneedling is one of the most-studied aesthetic procedures there is.

How microneedling works

Fine sterile needles create thousands of microchannels in the skin. The body responds as it does to any controlled injury: a healing cascade produces new collagen and elastin — exactly what declines with age. Unlike surface treatments, microneedling works where texture problems actually live: in the dermis.

What the studies show

  • Acne scars — the strongest evidence: studies show scar depth and visibility improving for most patients within 3–6 sessions.
  • Texture and fine lines — consistent improvement via increased collagen density; the effect builds over months.
  • Pores and tone — pores don’t "close", but they become less visible against densified skin.
  • Pigment and stretch marks — results are more individual; we set expectations honestly at the consultation.

Setting honest expectations

Three things marketing tends to skip. First: results arrive in months, not days — collagen matures slowly, with the biggest change visible 2–3 months after a course. Second: one session gives glow, but texture change takes 3–6 sessions. Third: home care (SPF!) either amplifies or cancels the result. What a session itself feels like is covered here.

Frequently asked questions

Does a home dermaroller do the same thing?

No — home-device needles are shorter (rightly, for safety) and don’t reach the dermis where collagen forms. A home roller can support product absorption; structural change needs professional depth and sterility.

Does microneedling hurt?

A numbing cream is applied beforehand; most people describe a light prickling. Redness settles in 1–3 days.

Who should not have it?

With active acne, flaring eczema, pregnancy or certain medications we postpone or choose another route — assessed at the consultation.

If your concern is scarring, texture or dull tone, microneedling is probably the best-evidenced option available. Book a consultation — we’ll assess your skin and tell you honestly how many sessions, and what result, to expect in your case.
