Back acne: why it happens and what actually helps

The back has thicker skin and more oil glands than the face, so facial habits do not transfer. What helps, and what does not.

Back acne is more common than people think and more uncomfortable than it needs to be — partly because it is talked about less. The good news is that the causes are well understood and there are answers. Our back treatment is €70 and runs 45 minutes.

Why is the back more prone to acne than the face?

Three reasons. The skin there is thicker and the pores larger. It carries more oil glands than almost anywhere else on the body. And it is permanently covered: clothing, a backpack, sweat and friction create exactly the conditions that block pores.

On top of that, the back is hard to clean properly yourself and harder still to keep an eye on. Many people notice the problem only once it is already inflamed.

What helps at home?

Three things that genuinely change something:

  • Wash your back after rinsing hair conditioner out, not before — conditioner runs down the back and blocks pores.
  • Change out of a sweaty shirt straight after training; sweat drying on the skin is one of the most common causes.
  • Use a salicylic acid wash a couple of times a week, not daily — over-washing irritates and makes it worse.

What does a professional back treatment do?

The session starts with gentle steaming and a thorough cleanse, then a customised exfoliating mask and, where needed, extractions — the part that cannot be done safely at home. It finishes with a calming treatment mask.

Extractions give the fastest visible change, but lasting improvement comes from repetition: for most people three sessions four weeks apart is a sensible start. There is a fuller description in our back facial guide.

When should you see a doctor instead?

If back acne is cystic — deep, painful nodules that scar — a cosmetic treatment is not the right first step. Prescription treatment from a dermatologist is more effective, and we will say so honestly rather than sell a course that will not solve it.

For the marks left behind afterwards, there is a separate article on pigmentation and post-acne marks.
