Laser vs IPL Hair Removal: What Is the Difference and Which Is Better?

Laser and IPL look similar but work differently. We explain how they differ, who each suits, and why our clinic uses laser.

When you start considering longer-lasting hair removal, two terms come up almost immediately: laser and IPL. In advertising they sound nearly identical and promise similar results, but there is a real difference in the technology behind them. In this article we explain, calmly and honestly, how the two methods work, who each one suits better, and why our clinic has chosen laser.

How do laser and IPL actually remove hair?

Both methods rely on the same principle: light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair (melanin), turns into heat, and damages the follicle so that the hair grows back slower and finer. The difference lies in the light source.

Laser uses a single, precise wavelength — a narrow, focused beam aimed directly at the hair pigment. IPL (intense pulsed light) uses a broad spectrum of light, more like a powerful flash lamp, scattered across several wavelengths at once.

What is the main difference between laser and IPL?

Put simply: laser is more targeted, IPL is more diffuse. That single difference affects everything — precision, comfort, and how well each method works on different skin and hair types.

  • Laser is focused and reaches deeper to the follicle, which usually means fewer sessions are needed.
  • IPL scatters over a wider area, so it can cover more surface at once, but the energy is delivered less precisely.
  • Laser can be tuned more accurately to different skin and hair tones.
  • IPL devices also exist for home use, but they are usually far weaker than clinic equipment.

Laser and IPL side by side

Laser

IPL

Light source

One precise wavelength

Broad spectrum, many wavelengths

Energy targeting

Focused on the hair pigment

Scatters into surrounding skin too

Suitable skin tones

Including darker skin (Nd:YAG)

Mainly lighter skin

Sessions in a course

Usually 6–8

Often 10–12 or more

How lasting

Permanent reduction in growth

Needs more frequent maintenance

Session length

Shorter, the energy does more

Longer, lower energy per pass

The table is a generalisation: the specific device and the operator’s skill matter more than the name of the technology. But the direction is consistent — laser does more work in fewer sessions.

Which one suits my skin and hair type?

Both methods work best when the hair is darker than the surrounding skin — because the light is looking for pigment. Very light, grey or reddish hair responds more weakly to either method.

The advantage of laser is that, thanks to its more precise wavelength, it can be adapted more safely to darker skin tones too. With the broad spectrum of IPL there is a greater chance that some of the energy is absorbed by the surrounding skin rather than only the hair. This is why suitability always depends on your particular skin and hair type, which we can review together during a consultation.

Is one of them more painful or riskier?

Sensations are individual, but most people describe both as a mild prickling or warmth rather than sharp pain. Modern lasers often include cooling, which makes the session more comfortable.

In terms of risk, much depends on who is operating the device. The wrong settings or an unsuitable skin type can, with either method, cause temporary redness or, less often, skin irritation. In the hands of an experienced specialist and with a proper assessment beforehand, both methods are generally well tolerated.

Why does our clinic use laser?

We have chosen laser because it gives us more control. A precise wavelength means we can tailor the treatment to each client individually, work more safely across different skin tones, and usually achieve results in fewer sessions. This does not mean IPL is bad — it is simply better suited to other purposes.

A realistic expectation matters too: no method removes hair forever in a single visit. Results are built up through a series of sessions and maintained with the occasional return visit. Every body responds a little differently.

If you are wondering whether laser is right for you, book a laser hair removal consultation — we will look at your skin and hair type together and put together an honest plan that fits you. No pressure, at your own pace.
