Leg Laser Hair Removal: Sessions, Timing and Aftercare
Legs are the largest area treated with laser — and one of the most rewarding. We explain how many sessions you need, when to start, and how sport and sauna fit around a course.

Shaving your legs is probably the most tedious recurring ritual hair removal has to offer — the surface is large and the result disappears within days. No wonder legs are one of the most requested laser areas. Let us look honestly at what to expect: the number of sessions, the right time to start, and how training, sauna and swimming fit around a course.
What to expect from leg laser hair removal?
Legs are the largest hair removal area on the body, so sessions take longer than elsewhere: lower legs usually take 20–30 minutes, full legs up to an hour. The good news is that leg skin is comparatively resilient and most clients find the sessions easy to tolerate — the sensation is a warm snap softened by cooling. You can choose to treat just the lower legs or the full legs; many start with the lower legs.
How many sessions do legs need?
As with other areas, the course logic applies to legs too: 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, because the laser only catches hairs in their active growth phase. Leg hair is mostly dark and coarse, so the result often shows nicely by the middle of the course — fewer hairs, finer ones, and less and less need to shave. You will find the full session logic explained here.
When is the best time to start on legs?
For legs, the season matters more than for any other area, because in summer your legs are in the sun. Laser and a fresh tan do not mix — treated skin needs UV protection both before and after each session. That makes autumn or winter the ideal start: the course runs calmly through trouser season, and by summer most of the work is done. We wrote about the timing maths in a separate article.
Sport, sauna and swimming during the course
For people with an active lifestyle, the most practical questions concern the first 48 hours after a session:
- Training — skip it for 24–48 hours: sweat and friction (e.g. leggings) irritate freshly treated skin.
- Sauna and hot baths — wait 48 hours; heat amplifies redness.
- Swimming — pool water is chlorinated and can sting sensitive skin, so pause for 48 hours as well.
- Everyday movement — walking and calm daily activity are fine straight away.
After the first two days, life continues as normal — only sun protection (SPF 30+) on bare legs remains a must until the end of the course.
How to care for leg skin during the course?
Leg skin tends to get dry, especially in winter, and dry skin tolerates laser less well and gets irritated more easily. That makes daily moisturising the most useful habit during a course — a simple fragrance-free body cream after your shower is entirely enough.
- Moisturise your legs every day, especially in the week before a session.
- Shave your lower legs the evening before a session — smooth skin lets the laser work precisely.
- Apply SPF 30+ to bare legs whenever they are in the sun.
As a bonus, many clients notice that ingrown hairs and the red dots around follicles fade as the course progresses — the skin becomes more even before the hair growth has even fully receded.
Frequently asked questions
Lower legs or full legs?
This is a question of comfort and preference. Lower legs are the most popular choice, because thigh hair is often lighter and finer. At the consultation we look at your hair growth and tell you honestly which option gives you more benefit.
Are varicose or spider veins an obstacle?
Surface-level spider veins are usually not a problem, but we review them at the consultation — where needed, we leave specific spots untreated and recommend checking with a doctor first.
Can I shave my legs during the course?
Yes, shaving is allowed throughout the course, and shaving before each session is actually required. Only root-removing methods are off limits: wax, sugaring and epilators.
How quickly will I see results?
Treated hairs shed within 1–3 weeks, and the first thinning is visible after a couple of sessions. The clear, lasting difference develops in the second half of the course.
If you want to be free of shaving by next summer, now is a good moment to set the plan. Book a consultation or see our laser hair removal service — we will work out the right course for your legs together.
